Archaeological records and climatological studies show that this was right in the middle of a lengthy famine that effected the entire Mediterranean. In the Biblical account, we learn that Joseph appointed men throughout the land of Egypt to oversee the gathering and storing of the grain in all the cities: GEN 41:34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years. Amenemhat III is credited with reducing the power of regional rulers. Exodus begins with a new Pharaoh coming onto the scene who did not know Joseph and his role in saving Egypt. Specifically: 8Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. For this reason, weknow that they were not built as tombs- if they were, they would have been constructed underground and they certainly would not have been so incredibly large. PRO 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. If there is no God, where did this idea of “religion and gods” come from? He also remained faithful to God. In fact, when you ask the Egyptians what the huge pits were for, they admit that they just don’t know. When Joseph reported having dreams of his brothers, and even the stars and moon, bowing before him, their jealousy of Joseph grew into action. (The generic name âPharaohâ was given to Egyptian rulers for more than 3,000 years. Inscriptions on a monument to Horemheb, a pharaoh several years after the Exodus, provide evidence of the story of Joseph’s pharaoh’s invitation to Jacob’s family to come to Egypt and live. We know that the pharaoh of Joseph had been king for an unknown period of time when Joseph was finally brought to him to interpret his dream. In fact, it sounds as if Joseph was the first person ever given such honor by a pharaoh, which is confirmed by evidences in Egypt. Egyptian history and the biblical record: a perfect match? 27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack’s mouth. Because of her, Abraham rises in the Pharaoh's favor and acquires livestock and servants. We donât know why the Bible doesnât give us this pharaohâs nameâalthough bear in mind that every pharaoh of ancient Egypt ⦠Excavation at this settlement has revealed a small palace belonging to a high ranking official. This palace was originally fronted by twelve columns. Later, the palace was expanded to add two identical sets of living quarters in front of the original structure. There could have been several “cashiers” of each language group to handle the purchases of those who spoke the various languages. For example, in “Song from the Tomb of King Intef”, we read: “I have heard the words of Imhotep and Hardedef…”. At the end of these manuscripts, the writer states that he is near death, having lived 110 years and that he received honors from the king exceeding those of the ancestors,- in other words, he received the most honors ever given a man by a pharaoh. In verse 24 she says, May ⦠In the inscription, the pharaoh is troubled about a famine and asks Imhotep who the god of the Nile is, so he can approach him about the drought: “… I asked him who was the Chamberlain,…Imhotep, the son of Ptah… `What is the birthplace of the Nile? 7 But the Israelis were fruitful and increased abundantly. supervised the agricultural production of Pharaohâs estates and was responsible GEN 47:26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part, except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh’s. Rock in Horeb found near burnt mountain in Saudi Arabia. When they received the grain, it was already in sacks: GEN 42:25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them. Then, the pharaoh dreams a dream which foretells the event. When the pharaoh figured out the cause for these inflictions, he called Abraham to account, asking him why he lied to him about Sarah. They went to wherever the grain was stored, and this was where Joseph was. forget the larger context of the story itself. (Loda IL: Aardsma Research and Publishing, 1993) pages 80--82. Other than sharing the unique title of “Father to Pharaoh,” both Joseph and Yuya were of foreign origin, and many scholars have commented on Yuya’s foreign appearance . Implementation of Josephâs plan would require a strong central government for several reasons. First, in order to be able to effectively tax the produce of the land in the years of plenty. It is believed that this inscription was written during the 2nd century BC, by the priests of Khnum for the purpose of justifying their claim of some land privileges. 6 Then Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died. Does this fit what we know of Joseph? If Joseph became the “Priest of On”, was he being unfaithful to the true God? If we look at ancient Egyptian history, we can see evidence which shows that it was during the time of Djoser that Egypt became a truly great nation- after all, it had gathered the wealth of all the surrounding nations by selling them grain during the famine. Now Joseph was already in Egypt. PRO 25:13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters. The palace grounds contain twelve tombs, all identified as Semitic burials. One of these tombs was originally covered by a pyramid. A very high honor reserved almost exclusively for royalty and unique in this period. Unlike the other tombs, this one is completely empty â no bones, no grave goods, nothing. Indications are that everything was removed in antiquity. Finally, this tomb contains the remains of a statue of its owner. The statue is of an Asiatic (Semite) with red hair and wearing a multicolored coat. Itâs worth thinking about what it He releases her and Abraham and orders them to take their goods and to leave Egypt. If we assume a long sojourn and use the orthodox or âoldâchronology for Egypt then Jacobâs arrival in Egypt would, with an Exodus date of 1446 BC, be in 1876 BC (1446+430). This places Joseph in the late twelfth dynasty of the Middle Kingdom, around the time of the pharaohs Senusret II, Senusret III, and Amenemhat III. Given Josephâs high position and activities,we would certainly expect to find evidence of him in the archaeological record, and indeed we do, if we look in this time period. In his book, Exodus: Myth or History?, Egyptologist David Rohl links a number of archaeological finds to Joseph, and these can be summarized as follows: Rohl provides more detail of course, but even from this basic summary it is clear to me that this evidence ties to Joseph and makes Amenemhat III the pharaoh of Joseph. This confirms that Joseph is correctly placed at the end of the twelfth dynasty in the Middle Kingdom period. However, this does not necessarily confirm the long sojourn is correct. Rohl notes that the Semitic settlement at Avaris was abandoned suddenly at the end of the thirteenth dynasty, indicating that the Exodus took place then. The problem is that this is only about two hundred years after Jacob came into Egypt and, based on the orthodox chronology, two hundred years before the exodus date of 1446 BC. Rohl has proposed a significant alteration to the Egyptian chronology, a ânewâ chronology, that removes two hundred years from the orthodox chronology, thereby aligning the archaeological evidence with the 1446 BC exodus date. This new chronology is not widely accepted, though it has significant appeal in that it not only aligns the evidence for the Exodus, but also for the conquest of Canaan, and sheds light on the life of Saul and the plunder of the temple by Shishak in 925 BC. Second, in order to conduct the necessary public works projects to prepare for the lean years, primarily the construction and maintenance of additional storage facilities given the amount of grain that would need to be stored. A final consideration is the protection of that grain particularly during the lean years. The story tells us that the famine impacted all of Egypt as well as Canaan and perhaps other countries as well. Consider that if these events occurred during the Second Intermediate Period when upper and lower Egypt had separate governments, then only one part of the country (presumably Lower Egyptâ the Nile delta region) would have been prepared. A starving Upper Egypt would have then looked to capture the stored grain and war would have ensued. Similarly, invasion from Canaan and elsewhere would have been likely in order to secure the available food. Absent a strong central government, Egypt would not have been able to defend its grain stores. Consequently, I believe that the context of the story makes a strong argument that the events described took place in a united Egypt and therefore during the Middle Kingdom period. This in turn suggests a long sojourn. Let’s take a look…. There is no treatment for it. [9] Wood, Joseph was the most loved son of his father, Israel, given the famous robe of many colors. The name the Bible states that was given to Joseph by the pharaoh, “Zaphenath-paneah”, has been translated by some to mean, “the God lives; the God speaks”. Joseph works as a slave, a practice that becomes widespread during the Middle Kingdom period. But God spoke in this way: that his[Abrahamâs] descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and they would bring them into bondage and oppress them four hundred years. Part of the inscription states the pharaoh dedicated some of the land and taxation to the god. We’ll compare a few passages of Ptahotep’s writings to the Bible: PRO 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 10 God saved Joseph from all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. (Gen. 46:34). 9) “The wise is known by his wisdom, the great by his good actions; his heart matches his tongue…”. This was partially true since she was his half-sister, but she was also his wife. These hundreds of thousands of ibis were mummified and brought here as tribute to Imhotep, filling these tunnels. Here is a compilation of BC items bearing on this question, in order of publication date.. Jesus Christ is called âthe true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the worldâ (John 1:9). His fame as a sage spread throughout Egypt and became the standard of wisdom. The unnamed pharaoh, through his princes, hears of the beauty of Abraham's wife Sarah who is summoned to meet him. August 11, 2019. And then there was the coat of many colors, a visible sign of Israelâs favor for Joseph. No inscriptions were found on the walls and the sarcophagus was empty. Some of these great evidences relate to the story of Joseph in ancient Egypt. GEN 41:8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; 2. 11 Then a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, causing great affliction. 19th century source criticism divided the Joseph story between the Jahwist, Elohist and Priestly sources of the documentary hypothesis. A Semitic settlement dating from the late twelfth dynasty has been found at Avaris, in the land of Goshen. Avaris was later renamed Rameses. In several inscriptions from much later times, reference is made to the “words of Imhotep”. Genesis 41:46 says that Joseph was 30 years old when he entered Pharaoh’s service. ECC 9:17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. There are definite records for the Biblical Joseph in Egyptian history. Josephs story began in Genesis 30 when he was born to Jacob and Rachel. Joseph had, after his interpretation of the king's dream, advised Pharaoh regarding agricultural matters relating to the future years of plenty and the following famine. With respect to Joseph, the convincing archaeological evidence which places Joseph as vizier to Amenhemat III creates an interesting dilemma for biblical scholars with respect to the length of the sojourn. For those that hold to the orthodox chronology, it is then required to accept a long sojourn of four hundred and thirty years and reject the shorter sojourn. On the contrary, those that accept the new chronology must then accept the short sojourn of two hundred and fifteen years as correct. Regardless of which chronology and sojourn length is chosen however, we now have a solid anchor point (in the form of the synchronism between Joseph and Amenhemat III) from which to measure earlier events such as Abrahamâs brief sojourn in Egypt â though there will still be disagreement on the BC dating of these events. and it goes on to explain that their “sayings” were recited in his day. 3) “If you probe the character of a friend, don’t enquire, but approach him, deal with him alone,…”. In the Bible, Joseph interprets the pharaohs dream. [10] Aling, In Egypt’s long list of “gods”, very few were ever once living among them. There was only one entrance into this center and there was an outside entrance into the system of storage bins. After the deification of Imhotep as “god of medicine” , he was given the title, “Chief One of the Ibis”- and this was the connection of this labyrinth with Imhotep. PRO 23:1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: God used Joseph to establish in Egypt a safe haven for the growth and development of the “seed of Abraham” until they were ready to be delivered into the land God had promised them. In this earlier tomb, which is similar to the preceding dynasties as Sakkara, there are clay sealings of jars which record Djoser’s name, his mother’s name, and the names of numerous other officials from his reign- but not Imhotep’s, which indicates that he hadn’t been appointed to his position yet. We learn of the early life of Joseph, second to last of the twelve brothers, yet the one most loved by his father Jacob (Israel) â certain to cause strong jealousy by the brothers. It was described by William Hayes as being a “veritable city in itself, planned and executed as a single unit and built of fine white limestone from the near-by Mukattam Hills.” (The Scepter of Egypt, Vol. It begins with the great distress of the pharaoh: “I was in distress on the Great Throne…”. The Bible Story of Joseph, from the Book of Genesis, is one of heroic redemption and forgiveness. Charles, PhD; âJoseph in Egypt, Part IVâ, Associates for Biblical Research, 7, April 1994). 21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: 22 To… teach his senators wisdom. 1, p. And during the 7 years of plenty, the people, under Joseph’s wise guidance, began to organize a great administrative center which would handle the selling of the grain to all the surrounding nations. 10) “If you are one among guests at the table of one greater than you, take what he gives as it is set before you.”. (Gen. 13:1,2). GEN 41:16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. They multiplied in numbers and became very, very strong. Joseph is made the Chief Steward of the King, a role that historically Some ancient historians have written of the fact that the pyramids were once believed to be “Joseph’s storage bins” for the grain, and perhaps this story has its roots in the fact Joseph designed the first pyramid in the same complex in which the grain was stored. PRO 27:1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. In our discussion of “Imhotep, the Physician”, we mentioned that ancient Greek texts speak of a place near Memphis where people came to worship “Imhotep” and be healed. The Bible is quite clear on his high rank under the pharaoh: GEN 41:40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. March 15, 2010, A historical timeline of the ancient world based on scripture and archaeology, The Rise and Fall of the 13th Century Exodus-Conquest Theory, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senusret_III, Joseph feels the need to shave when he is released from prison. Asiatics (e.g. Arthur Weigall, one of the archaeologists involved in the discovery of Yuya’s tomb, wrote: “He was a … In Genesis 30:22 God remembers Rachels prayers. At his death or disability, it follows that his son-in-law would be assigned his position, especially if that son-in-law were so highly regarded by the pharaoh as Joseph was. dangerous underground excavations explore radar anomalies, Underground chamber reveals Temple treasures, Ron Wyatt – Chromosome count in ‘blood’ sample. Again, the evidence points to Imhotep. These Bible activities highlight this important time in Josephâs life. Well, it gets even more familiar as we examine the text of these manuscripts. This doesn’t mean that Solomon copied from the ancient Egyptians- it means that the God of His Fathers gave the same wisdom to his ancestors, who included Joseph, that He gave to Solomon. There are many details in the Joseph story that are 43 And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. “Imhotep, the Voice of the God, Im (I AM)” 45And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. Joseph comes to Egypt as a common manâactually a slaveâand rises to become the right-hand man of the Pharaoh. This passage reflects the fact of a dream by the pharaoh of 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine, although reversed. In 1953 Gerhard von Rad made a detailed assessment of its literary artistry and drew attention to its identity as a Wisdom novella, and in 1968 R. N. It is also reasonable to expect to find the storage pits within an enclosure such as this complex, with an area for the payment of the grain. Jacob had children with her sister Leah (see Genesis 29), and Rachel became jealous. There are 2 particular statements in Ptahotep’s writings which indicate that this is exactly what happened. Is there any archaeological evidence for Joseph? Joseph is critical to the biblical timeline because the genealogy provided in Genesis ends with Jacob. Identifying when the events in the Joseph story took place, and therefore when Jacob arrived in Egypt is critical to our ability to extend the timeline back before the exodus. As with the exodus, no conclusive archaeological evidence of Joseph has been found. But could this be because we have been looking in the wrong place, or rather the wrong time? Statues may vanish, but pedestals remain. (Galatians 3:17). But, we all know the God, “I AM”: EXO 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. This is the beginning of the period of affliction prophesied in Genesis 15. The most likely cause of a ânew kingâ is a dynastic transition. Looking at the history of Egypt in this period, according to the orthodox chronology, and the details of the text, there are a couple of candidates for this role. The most obvious one is Amenhotep I. Before we consider any candidate, we first must allow sufficient time before the exodus for the events in Mosesâ life as shown in Figure 2. The exodus occurred when Moses was eighty years old which, based on an exodus in 1446 BC, places his birth in 1526 BC at the very end of the reign of Amenhotep I or the beginning of the reign of Thutmose I. Thus, Amenhotep is the las tpossible candidate to be the new king. Amenhotep is also the first Pharaoh of a new dynasty, the 18th,even though he was the son of the last 17th dynasty Pharaoh. Amenhotep was responsible for reasserting control over lower Egypt and the oases of the western desert, beginning a new period of a united Egypt and ending the Second Intermediate period. Given the duration of the Second Intermediate period (about 250 years) it would be quite natural that he would be unaware of the contribution of Joseph. At the same time, he would be naturally suspicious of the Asiatic population in the Nile delta, Hebrews and others, having just reasserted control over that area. This would explain his behavior in Exodus 1:10 in enslaving, or perhaps further enslaving the children of Israel. There is little doubt that either Amenhotep I or his son Tutmose I is the Pharaoh that gave the command to kill all the newborn Hebrew males (Exodus 1:16). It would be about 200 years later when Joseph would be elevated to his high position in Egypt, second only to the pharaoh. As a result, the land was filled with them. When excavations were carried out at the Step Pyramid at Sakkara, fragments of a statue of pharaoh Djoser were found. And the storage of such a massive amount of grain would have required a large storage area, such as the extremely large pits found in this complex. So here we have an inscription which tells a story of pharaoh Djoser asking his vizier, Imhotep, to help him with the problem of a great 7 year famine. Joseph and PharaohâHistory and Archaeology Give a Big Thumbs Up! 4. Soon after this (we don’t know exactly how soon) he and Sarah went to Egypt because of a famine in Canaan. And, it is one of the best preserved site in Egypt- certainly of the very old structures- and this is consistent with God’s preservation of important evidences which confirm the total accuracy of His Word. (verse 20). Joseph likely also has this status because he is the eldest child of Jacobâs favorite (deceased) wife, Rachel. '” Imhotep answers: “I need the guidance of Him who presides over the fowling net,…”. There are examples of proverbs in many ancient civilizations, but the only ones which Solomon recorded by inspiration and today appear in the Bible are very similar to the ancient Egyptian “wisdom literature” which can be traced back to Imhotep. The consequence of all of this math is that if we start from Abrahamâs arrival in Canaan, the length of time actually spent in Egypt is reduced by (25+60+130=215) years. So, if we follow the Septuagint, Galatians 3:17, and Josephus we have what is known as a âshortâ sojourn of 215 years. Following the Masoretic text and the Dead Sea Scrolls give us a âlongâsojourn of 430 years. In order to choose between these two approaches, we first need to look at Josephâs activities in Egypt. 1786-1570 BC (Vergote 1959; Kitchen 1962; Stigers 1976), a time when an Asiatic group called the Hyksos ruled the delta of the Nile. And the evidence shows that Imhotep was not Djoser’s vizier earlier in his reign- in fact, no mention is made at all of Imhotep on Djoser’s earlier monuments. (Gen. 12:12-15). And, we know that Joseph died at the age of 110 years. The Wisdom of Imhotep Grain Storage Bins Yet, no one seems to think it strange that every known civilization has had some type of religious system. David Rohl, author of Test of Time, suggests âRamses II should be dated to the tenth century BCâsome three hundred and fifty years later than the date which had been assigned him in the orthodox chronology.â1 Peter James and four other scholars published the book Centuries of Dar⦠When Joseph’s brothers came to get grain, they came face to face with Joseph who was overseeing the distribution. See Section III, 2. Receive updates on upcoming tours, events, and specials. Of course, the Egyptologists think all these little cubicles were for statues, however, no pedestals were found in the remains, which is a very important point, because these statues were always erected on pedestals. Is Imhotep Joseph? So important is Imhotep to Egyptology, that in the Guidebook to Sakkara by Jill Kamil, “The Tomb of Imhotep” is listed as a subject heading, only to explain that it has not been found. Inscriptions and coins found here show that people came here to be healed! The time of the 300 Year Gap However, in the pharaoh’s burial complex under the pyramid, we find matching bins for the king and his family’s afterlife- and in these bins were found grain and other food stuffs. There are two main theories as to where to date Joseph, and the are known as the short sojourn and the long sojourn. To begin to understand what those terms mean we need to start with some scripture. Exodus 12:40-41 states: 40Now the sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. The king gave Joseph a new name âZaphnath-paaneah ( Genesis 41:45 ). Joseph, son of Jacob (Israel), was Imhotep, of Egyptian History Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob, the Patriarch of Israel. In the new testament we find a couple of additional references to the length of time the children of Israel spent in Egypt. Pharaoh made Joseph governor over Egypt and all Pharaohâs house. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. Pharaoh Sesostris I is identified as the pharaoh who appointed Joseph over Egypt, with Joseph himself possibly being identified as Mentuhotep, Sesostris’ vizier or prime minister. They also discovered that this chamber belonged to a very large mastaba tomb which contained a second chamber full of broken stone vessels, and in the tomb’s storerooms were jars whose clay-stoppers had the seal impression of Djoser! Josephâs prediction and advice pleased Pharaoh and he made Joseph his second-in-command. Joseph had given this plan to the pharaoh prior to his appointment as vizier or prime minister, and since it would be impossible for him to oversee the gathering and storing for the entire country, we know he implemented this plan. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. In the early 20th century Hermann Gunkel suggested that, unlike the Abraham-Isaac-Jacob stories, the Joseph story formed a single unitary story with literary rather than oral origins. Joseph’s main position was that of a prime minister and Imhotep appears to be the first who could boast of such a broad range of authority in ancient Egypt. 14And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come outwith great possessions. There Joseph eventually gains the favour of the pharaoh of Egypt by his interpretation of a dream and obtains a high place in the pharaohâs kingdom. And in ancient Egypt, the people didn’t live too much longer than about 50. Finegan, Jack; Handbook of Biblical Chronology; Peabody, Massachusetts,Hendrickson Publishers Marketing, LLC, Revised Edition, © 1998; pp 206-244,§364-419. Finegan supports a late Exodus and places Joseph in the late Second Intermediate Period and is useful to become familiar with those theories. Is there a connection between Joseph and dreams? (Originally published in Newsletter No. 1664-1555 BC) this cannot be reconciled with the biblical information. All available information about Imhotep continues to point to his identification with Joseph. One of them was Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob. Last of all, grain was found in the floor of these pits, which has been explained by Egyptologists as having been from foods buried with deceased who were buried there- however, no evidence of burials was ever found in these pits. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph was taken to Egypt where he eventually gets thrown into prison on account of a false accusation. But regardless of what the “experts” want to believe about the Step Pyramid complex, the circumstantial evidence fits the story of Joseph perfectly.
